Avatar: impressive effects but little else

There are two polar views on the new biggest film of all time, James Cameron’s Avatar. The most popular is that it’s a life changing movie, with beautiful visuals, incredible special effects and a moving and inspiring story. Some people leave the cinema feeling depressed that life isn’t as beautiful as the movie.
Another point of view is that it’s an impressive technological achievement, but… And I am in this camp. Sure, the CGI effects are surprisingly convincing and the modeling of the aliens is probably better than we’ve seen before. ...

Caprichos del Apolo 2010

Now in it’s six consecutive year, the Caprichos del Apolo, a discreet but no less admired series of concerts has begun in Barcelona. As always, the line up is diverse and challenging enough to satisfy the curiosity of the most restless and demanding music fan. This year brings a range of artists from different generations, styles and backgrounds – a choice that is as risky as the music is excellent.
The cycle began on January 3 and runs until March 16 with New Yorkers Yeasayer, who promise an interesting mix of ...

The Irati forest, a symphony of color

Autumn is the best time of year to visit the Irati Forest, and so when the weather forecast was good, I began my journey. I settled on the town of Abaurrea Baja, located midway between Ochagavia and Orbaiceta, to be the headquarters for my trips into Irati.
From reference and intuition, I had thought that the landscape there would be enjoyable but to my surprise I found it to be overwhelmingly beautiful and exuberant. My eyes, metaphorically, were blinded by a huge explosion of a mixture of colors that flooded the ...

Experiencing Joshua Tree in California

If you’re looking for a different side to California, away from the shine of Hollywood and the perfect bodies of Venice Beach, venture inland into the Desert.
We traveled from LA to Joshua Tree national park, taking highway 10 out of the city for almost three hours, turning off just before we hit Palm Springs. Here we found a harsh environment, scattered with the eponymous trees, and some interesting towns.

On Route 62 you’ll find the town of Joshua Tree, and it’s worth stopping just to grab some food at the excellent ...

Nottingham Contemporary

The East Midlands of the United Kingdom have gained a new art gallery, in the shape of the new Nottingham Contemporary. It’s opening exhibition features both David Hockney, ‘England’s favorite painter’, and Frances Stark from Los Angeles.

The gallery is compact, with 4 main galleries, plus the usual shop, cafe, and a space for showing films. The building sits on a corner of a street next to a church, and despite its concrete and metal structure, it fits in very well with Nottingham’s picturesque lace market area.
The exhibitions are contrasting, with ...

Barcelona Primavera Club 2009

Last week saw Primavera Club take over the music scenes in Barcelona and Madrid. There were concerts everyday, too many to manage! We went to as many as we could, and saw a nice range of bands.
On Wednesday, there were the hugely contrasting The Black Heart Procession and Health in Sala Apolo. The former offered dark, slow bluesy grooves, and then Health came on stage for a short but intense burst of sound. With some bands, you might complain if the only played for 35 minutes – but it’s perfect ...

Napa Valley and the wine route

Napa Valley is a famous wine region located in the area known as North Bay, about 90 miles north of San Francisco, California. The valley hosts about 300 wine producers spread over 48 square kilometres through the counties of Napa, Yountville, Rutherford, St. Helena, and Calistoga. A visit to Napa Valley is the perfect excuse rent a car, cross the Golden Gate and an ideal opportunity to enjoy a lovely day trip.

We recommend stopping at the city of Napa to eat at the Ubuntu restaurant, which offers vegan haute cuisine ...

The Peloponnese in winter

I wish these pictures could show fully what a great impression this winter trip made on me. To start with, we rented a car in Athens and decided to venture into the Peloponnese, traveling with only the Lonely Planet guide and no hotel reservations.

Most hotels were closed, the old roads were narrow with almost no traffic and dilapidated, but it was very authentic, poetic and magical. The Mediterranean cuisine was fantastic, cypresses and olive trees dominate the countryside and culture is present everywhere.

Entering the Peloponnese was like entering into a ...

Discovering Salvador de Bahia

Salvador de Bahía is a unique city with a strong identity, which visitors will certainly not feel indifferent about. For travelers to north east Brazil, it is without doubt a must see attraction.
First impressions can be shocking, as the state of Bahia has seen economic stagnation for many years, and the city of Salvador is a vivid reflection of this; open sewers, huge poverty and chaotic traffic.

Despite that, Salvador has energy and and almost unparalleled beauty, in part due to the cultural and ethnic mixing that has occurred ...

Halloween around the world

Halloween means “All Hallow’s Eve”, derived from Old English, meaning “eve of all saints.” It refers to the night of Oct. 31, eve of the Feast of All Saints. However. like many Christian festivals, it was actually based on an older pagan one. It was believed on this day that spirits passed from this world to the next – and people had to protect themselves from the bad ones!
The modern day festival gained popularity especially in the US, where traditions such as “trick or treating” began. It has spread all ...
